Purpose of the role
- To plan, control, manage and be accountable for overall delivery of an IT project(s) to meet the agreed business needs, acquiring and utilising the necessary resources and skills, within agreed parameters of cost, timescales and quality
- To ensure that the business case is produced by the business which quantifies potential business benefits with input provided by Business Analysts
- To ensure business change activities and requirements are included in the project plan as defined by the Change Manager, Business Analyst and the business
- To be accountable for testing at project plan level
- To work with the business to make sure they track and measure business benefits that were identified in the business case
- To work with IT Procurement, IT colleagues and Suppliers to ensure the most cost effective, timely & appropriate IT solutions are developed to fulfill the commercial and business requirements
- To establish and maintain good relationships with the business, IT and suppliers resolving conflicting priorities or issues that may arise
- To be familiar with tools and technologies to be able to make the right decisions for issues affecting the delivery of the IT project
- To ensure adherence to defined methods and standards including the operating model and quality gates and participating in robust quality assurance activities on projects
Key accountabilities
- Responsible for day-to-day delivery of the end-to-end IT project (or multiple projects) to meet the agreed business requirements within timescale, cost and quality constraints working with relevant IT Group resources to achieve the desired result including:
- Estimating, scheduling, planning, tracking and controlling tasks to manage the scope of the project, ensuring sign off by the business sponsor prior to commencement of implementation, through tracking milestones, critical path and dependencies
- Responsibility for setting and managing to budget
- Reporting the progress of the project at agreed regular intervals
- Preparing, managing and reporting on the project budget, monitoring project costs
- Working effectively with Architects to ensure that the technology & systems ‘blue print' clearly supports projects plans
- Working with Procurement and IT colleagues to develop IT solution options, IT resourcing options and IT delivery plans
- Ensuring milestones relating to the creation of the business case, training, definition and sign off of acceptance criteria, and benefits tracking are included in the project plan and adhered to by the business
- Exploring both internal & external IT resourcing options and agree approach with commercial and IT colleagues
- Monitoring progress on plans, creating contingency plans for risks and addressing issues that arise in the course of projects, escalating to the relevant Programme Manager and where necessary to the Project Sponsor, such that projects are completed to time, cost and quality
- Responsibility for the quality assurance and standards and overall integrity of the project
- Assisting project stakeholders to realise maximum potential/ opportunities with project deliverables
- Continually assessing whether the project continues to meet business objectives
- Effective use of the IT operating model standards & methodology ensuring tight alignment to the PMO for project delivery
- Recognised as the main IT contact for the project within IT, the commercial area & with suppliers
- Create highly effective relationships, manage and communicate with the business, IT colleagues, Suppliers, SIs & external organisations throughout the project lifecycle
- Communicate and provide visibility of the progress of the project demonstrating control over both internal & supplier progress and the continued viability of the project
- Proactively identify synergies across projects and/or work packages and develop approaches for reducing cost, risk and timescales
- Contribute back to the wider knowledge base of expertise so other projects benefit
- Where applicable, task manage internal resources across projects taking full responsibility for inspiring, supporting and mentoring through to project delivery
- Manage key suppliers and provide supplier and SI performance data, (including monitoring contracts and performance, recommending actions, as well as enforcement of penalty clauses and/or termination if appropriate) to commercial management function to ensure supplier performance is in accordance with supplier contract

Key Skills
- Strong experience in dealing with senior business users
- Familiar with tools and technologies to be able to make the right decisions for issues that impact project delivery
- Expert in project management methodologies and approaches and detailed experience in Microsoft Project including:
o Project planning, estimating, monitoring and controlling tools and techniques
o Risk management techniques - risk identification, analysis, estimation and mitigation
o Quality management tools and techniques
- Knowledge of or qualification in a project management methodology (e.g. PRINCE2)
- Understanding of IT Group operating model, GDPM, IT Policies and Quality Processes
- Strong experience of managing successful IT projects through the full project lifecycle using leadership qualities and management skills to ensure that project stays on plan
- Familiar with IT architecture, design, operational service & support
- Familiar with IT & having a commercial perspective & an understanding of how the project contributes to the business case
- Familiar with the IT market & emerging trends
- Strong experience in creating, managing and motivating an IT team
- Expert knowledge of the IT investment evaluation process, including cost/benefit analysis & estimating IT cost/resources etc for both defined & undefined initiatives
- Ability to interact with diverse groups of technical and non-technical people
- Proficient in basic business analysis
- Ability to work under pressure & successfully prioritise & make trade-offs on work & time for self & others
- Good understanding of the technologies used for development of applications in M & S IT Group
- Strong experience of Supplier and SI management - knowledge of different contracting, payment and penalty constructs, experience of managing suppliers within a commercial framework to extract maximum value for money.
